Before the new year, delivery workers at Swiggy, Zomato, and Amazon go on a statewide strike. What do they want?
Just one day before the New Year, on Wednesday, December 31, gig and platform workers nationwide went on strike. Shaik Salauddin, President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), informed news agency that these workers, who work for businesses like Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Amazon, have joined the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) to pursue their demands.
Workers participating in the nationwide strike are calling for adjustments to their wages and working conditions, and the walkout may have an impact on delivery services on well-known applications. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) issued the call for the demonstration. According to Salauddin, the founder and president of the organization, the strike is being organized in reaction to what employees perceive to be discriminatory policies implemented by platform-based businesses. He stated that despite repeated requests, the many issues brought up by employees have not been resolved,
According to him, employees have consistently voiced their requests to platform businesses and asked for the reinstatement of an earlier payout system. In the past, fair payments were paid for holidays like Dussehra, Diwali, and Bakrid. Salauddin stated, "That system needs to be implemented again on a regular basis."
